Moment-by-moment footage shows Iran's warship sinking after being shot by the U.S. near Indonesia.
A video purporting to show the moment Iran’s warship sinks after being fired on by the United States was released by the U.S. Department of Defence on Wednesday. The footage shows a vessel believed to be Iranian suffering severe damage before it sinks into the sea. According to Reuters on Thursday (5 March 2026), U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that an American submarine sank the Iranian warship off the southern coast of Sri Lanka, about 1,750 km from Aceh, Indonesia, on the same day. Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath identified the vessel as IRIS Dena, one of the Iranian Navy’s ships. The shape of the deck and mast visible in the video was deemed to match the archival image of a warship of the same class. The incident comes amid rising tensions between the United States and Iran. In a statement on Wednesday, Pete Hegseth asserted that Washington would continue to intensify military pressure on Iran. He described the United States’ military campaign as ‘not a fair fight’ and stressed that operations against Iran would continue in the coming days.
