Molotov Cocktail Thrown at ChatGPT Boss's Home, Perpetrator Arrested
The home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in San Francisco, United States, was targeted with a Molotov cocktail by a 20-year-old man on Friday morning (10/4/2026) local time. The attack set fire to the outer gate of the ChatGPT boss’s residence. After carrying out the act, the perpetrator fled the scene. Local police rushed to the location of the incident. However, less than an hour later, police received a report that OpenAI’s headquarters had received a threat of an arson attack from a man. Upon investigation, it was determined that the man was the same individual who threw the Molotov cocktail at Altman’s home. The man was subsequently arrested, but his identity and motive for the attack have not yet been disclosed to the public. “We greatly appreciate the swift response from the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) and the city’s support in helping to ensure the safety of our employees,” OpenAI stated, as quoted by KompasTekno from the Independent. Meanwhile, Altman personally responded to the attack on his residence and company via his personal blog. According to Altman, he had previously underestimated the impact of the narratives and rhetoric developing in the public sphere. Altman also acknowledged that the past few years have been intensely chaotic and full of pressure. Therefore, he called on various parties in the AI industry to lower the level of conflict, both in terms of rhetoric and tactics used. However, Altman also believes that technological progress can make the future better for all parties. The attack occurred amid various controversies engulfing OpenAI, ranging from collaboration with the US Department of Defense, fierce competition with Anthropic, to a lawsuit from Elon Musk. In the lawsuit scheduled to begin trial at the end of this month, Elon Musk is suing OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, with allegations that Altman deliberately manipulated him into donating $38 million to OpenAI through promises that the company would remain a non-profit organisation. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI with Altman in 2015, also demands that Altman be removed from his position as CEO as part of the legal action, as compiled by KompasTekno from CNBC.
