Mojtaba Khamenei receives special message from Megawati Soekarnoputri
FORMER President of the Republic of Indonesia and Chair of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) Megawati Soekarnoputri conveyed her congratulations on the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s new Supreme Leader, succeeding his late father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Megawati’s letter to Mojtaba Khamenei was delivered to Iran’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi.
“This is the second letter, and I am delighted that Iran now has a leader again,” Megawati said in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday (10 March).
This was conveyed by Megawati while receiving a visit from Boroujerdi at her residence in Menteng, Jakarta. During the meeting, Megawati was accompanied by PDIP Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto, along with PDIP Central Management Board members Ahmad Basarah, Yasonna Laoly, and Eriko Sotarduga, as well as the head of PDIP’s Research and Policy Analysis Institute, Andi Widjajanto.
Previously, on 3 March 2026, Megawati had sent a letter to the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran expressing her deep condolences on the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei following attacks by the United States and Israel.
In addition to delivering the letter, Megawati also presented a photograph from her official visit to Tehran in 2004, during which she met with Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
“This is evidence that I had a friendship relationship with the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei,” said Megawati.
The two had a warm conversation lasting more than one hour. Following the meeting, Megawati presented Ambassador Boroujerdi with a gift in the form of a Balinese traditional woven shirt.
Mojtaba Khamenei has officially succeeded his father, Ali Khamenei, as Iran’s Supreme Leader and becomes the third leader since the Iranian Revolution. The father-to-son succession has triggered criticism as it resembles a dynastic system that contradicts the spirit of the revolution, which rejected monarchy.
