The political landscape and power dynamics in the Islamic Republic of Iran are entering a crucial new phase. Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Ali Khamenei, who died in a weekend air strike by the United States and Israel, has now emerged as the strongest candidate to become Iran’s new Supreme Leader.

A report from The New York Times on Tuesday (3 March), citing sources close to Iranian officials, said that a council of senior religious figures and clerics held intensive deliberations to determine the country’s future direction. In the meeting, Mojtaba Khamenei’s name surfaced as a leading figure deemed capable of preserving Iran’s ideological and military stability at present.

As of Wednesday morning (4 March), Tehran’s top authorities were reportedly still weighing the nomination of Mojtaba. The succession is seen as highly sensitive given Iran’s ongoing direct hostilities with Western powers.

Mojtaba Khamenei, long known for behind-the-scenes influence and his closeness to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), is viewed as a symbol of continuity in Iran’s resistance to the US and Israel.

The leadership crisis was triggered by the joint attack launched by the US and Israel on Saturday (28 February 2026). The strike targeted several strategic sites in the capital Tehran, causing heavy damage to infrastructure and the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

In response, Iran has activated air defence protocols and launched hundreds of ballistic missiles and suicide drones at Israel. Additionally, American military assets in several Gulf states have been reported as targets of Iranian counterstrikes.

If Mojtaba is officially inaugurated soon, his first task would be to decide whether Iran will continue to escalate the war or seek diplomatic openings amid mounting global pressure. The international community now awaits an official Tehran announcement on who will hold the baton of the supreme leadership.
