Former Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri has sent a congratulatory message on the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s new Supreme Leader. The message was conveyed through a letter to the Iranian Ambassador to Indonesia.

Megawati received a visit from Mohammad Boroujerdi, the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Indonesia, at her residence in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, 10 March 2026. Megawati expressed her joy that Iran had now selected a new Supreme Leader.

“This is the second letter; I am pleased that Iran now has a leader again,” Megawati said whilst presenting the letter.

During the meeting, Megawati was accompanied by PDIP General Secretary Hasto Kristiyanto, alongside PDIP Chairman Ahmad Basarah, Yasonna Laoly, Eriko Sotarduga, and PDIP’s Head of Research and Policy Analysis Andi Widjajanto.

On 3 March, Megawati had previously sent a letter to the Islamic Republic of Iran expressing deep condolences over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, following attacks by the United States and Israel on the nation.

In addition to the letter, Megawati also presented a photograph from her official visit to Tehran in which she met with Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in 2004.

“This is evidence that I had a friendship with the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei,” Megawati told Ambassador Boroujerdi.

They engaged in warm conversation for over an hour. Following the meeting, Megawati presented a gift consisting of a Balinese batik shirt to Ambassador Boroujerdi.

Mojtaba Khamenei is the second son of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Ali Khamenei died in an attack by the United States and Israel in Tehran on 28 February.
