JAKARTA - Former TNI Commander General (Retired) Moeldoko has remembered the sixth Vice President of Indonesia and former ABRI Commander, General (Retired) Try Sutrisno, as a military leader who emphasised the importance of soldiers respecting women’s rights and being present within society.

“And there was one extraordinary clause there about respecting women’s rights. So soldiers had to uphold that,” said Moeldoko, as quoted from Kompas TV on Monday (2 March 2026).

According to Moeldoko, Try Sutrisno consistently motivated soldiers to become true patriots by upholding the values of honesty and patriotism. This principle was one he held when serving as TNI Commander.

“So I created a tagline at that time together with the people: TNI is strong. Together with the people, TNI is strong. Only through this does TNI become strong. If TNI abandons the people, TNI will become weak,” he said.

He recalled having a memorable experience when he was a junior officer serving as a company commander. When Try visited his battalion at that time, he was seen as capable of inspiring the soldiers’ spirit.

“What I saw from his figure was how he, as a Commander, became an agitator for soldiers. Truly capable of inspiring extraordinary spirit. And inspiring. How to provide motivation to all soldiers to become truly patriotic soldiers,” Moeldoko recalled.

Indonesia’s sixth Vice President Try Sutrisno passed away at Gatot Soebroto Army Central Hospital (RSPAD) in Jakarta on Monday (2 March 2026). The news was confirmed by former RSPAD Chief Lieutenant General (Retired) Albertus Budi Sulistya.

According to information received, Try Sutrisno passed away at RSPAD at 06.58 WIB. According to plan, his body will be prayed over at Sunda Kelapa Mosque and buried at Kalibata Heroes Cemetery this afternoon.
