Modern Salt Industrialisation to be Established in Sampang
The Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM is actively facilitating plans to build a modern salt industry in Sampang Regency, East Java. This strategic move follows interest from global investors looking to inject capital into the region’s salt processing sector.
The President Director of PT Garam, Abraham Mose, revealed that two countries, namely China and the United Arab Emirates, are seriously exploring this investment.
“The presence of these investors will not only provide economic added value for the local community and salt farmers but also serve as an important catalyst to accelerate the national salt self-sufficiency programme,” said Abraham on Saturday, 26 September 2026.
Sampang is considered highly ideal for large-scale salt industry development due to several key supporting factors, such as the availability of approximately 1,300 hectares of salt pond areas.
This industrialisation project will move away from traditional methods, instead implementing Mechanical Vapor Recompression (MVR) technology, or thermal energy recycling.
“This modern technology offers significant advantages, such as the ability to reduce traditional steam usage by up to 90% and relying on compressor electrification to drastically reduce carbon emissions without continuous fossil fuel combustion,” he added.
Currently, PT Garam, in collaboration with the Ministry of Investment, is completing pre-feasibility (pre-FS) and feasibility studies (FS), including coordinating with the Sampang Regency Government regarding the preparation of additional land if required. The entire preparation process, up to the determination of project partners, is expected to take approximately one year.
