Modern Kartini Not Only in the Public Sphere, This is a Sociologist's View
The meaning of the modern Kartini is not only about women who are active in the public sphere, but also about the strategic role in building the nation’s generation.
Amidst changing times and the flow of women’s empowerment, the role of women is still considered to have an important position in social and family life.
Sociologist from Universitas Nasional (Unas) Jakarta, Nia Elvina, M.Si, assesses that the concept of the modern Kartini needs to be viewed more broadly and contextually. She conveyed this when contacted by Kompas.com on Tuesday (21/4/2026).
She refers to the book Sarinah by Indonesia’s first President, Soekarno, as one of the important references.
“I think the book Sarinah can be used as a reference in developing women’s potential and nation-building,” said Nia.
This thinking is still considered relevant in viewing women’s roles in the present day.
She explains that in the social system, there is a division of labour between father and mother.
Fathers play more roles in the public domain as breadwinners.
Meanwhile, mothers have an important role in the domestic domain, especially in building emotional relationships within the family.
She mentions that several studies show that this function can decrease if not carried out optimally.
“The affection function does not or is less effective when women fully enter the public domain,” she explained.
