The General Elections Commission (KPU) admitted that a small number of polling stations in at least six provinces had failed to hold election on Monday due to various problems ranging from late arrivals of ballot papers to transportation difficulties.

KPU chairman Nazaruddin Sjamsuddin said that four polling stations in Indragiri Hulu regency in Riau, two polling stations in Jambi, 78 polling stations in Central Java,10 polling stations in East Nusa Tenggara, 50 polling stations in Manokwari in West Irian Jaya, and at least 513 polling stations in Papua could not hold election on Monday.

He also said that in West Sumatra, four polling stations had not yet reported whether or not they had held election on Monday due to the missing ballot papers.

In North Sumatra, he said, some regencies: South Tapanuli, Pematang Siantar, Tanjung Balai and Tebing Tinggi were still being monitored by KPU whether or not they managed to hold election on Monday.

"The number of polling stations that failed to hold election on Monday is small if we compare them with the total 585,218 polling stations," he told a press conference at Borobudur Hotel late evening.

"But it is important to hold election in those polling stations as voters in those polling stations still have their rights to vote."
