Mob burns Golkar flags

PEKANBARU: Nearly 200 flags of the Golkar Party were set on
fire by angry demonstrators in the city on Thursday, but no
casualties were reported.

The incident was estimated to have taken place between 1:00
a.m. until some time before dawn, as many people had assembled at
the site before 1:00 a.m.

The demonstrators also took down the flag poles, but the
motive for the action was not immediately clear.

Golkar candidates had put up the flags in preparation for
installing the local executive board of the Golkar's youth group,
scheduled for Oct. 8.

Pekanbaru Police chief Toty S. Indra said he would launch an
inquiry as soon as he receives a report from those who
complained. --Antara
