MKGR Party courts drag queens
PALU, Central Sulawesi: The MKGR Party's promises to raise the dignity of marginalized people has won the hearts and minds of local drag queens.
The party led by Mien Sugandhi, former minister of women's affairs renown for her thick Javanese accent, told transvestites attending its Friday campaigning it would stand by their cause for equal political rights.
"The time has come for transvestites to retain their basic rights like any other citizens," shouted MKGR executive Hj. Syamsiar Lasahido from a makeshift stage at Bumi Nyiur soccer field.
So impressed were the transvestites that some jumped onto the stage and sang songs to entertain the hundreds of party supporters attending the rally.
Drag queens Selvy, Merry and Mona, who appeared on stage in their colorful dresses, vowed they would vote for MKGR in the June 7 election.
"I'm so happy MKGR will fight for our cause. Viva MKGR Party and viva transvestites!" Selvy shouted in her manly voice after serenading the party supporters.
Mona, who has thin lips and a throaty voice, added, "Lets join hands and promote the MKGR Party."
Good luck, girls!
