JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia opened the women's event of the Asia
Badminton Championships with a shaky start when its women's
doubles team of Nonong and Deyana Lomban were dumped out of the
event.
The Indonesian second string doubles players fought it out
only to fall 7-15, 6-15 to China's Qian Hong and Gao Qian.
Despite the tough challenge by the Indonesians in the first set,
it took less than an hour for the aggressive Chinese shuttlers to
seal the match and secure a third-round berth.
Indonesia gained more than consolation when women's doubles
number two Elisa and Zelin Resiana yesterday beat Ye Zhaoying and
Han Jingna, China's top two singles players who are making their
debut in an international event, 15-12, 18-16.
Elisa and Zelin, who surprisingly marched into the All-England
final before losing to South Korean Gil Young-ah and Jang Hye-ock
last month, got off to a flimsy start in front of the home crowd.
Their resilience, however, paid off as the Chinese failed to come
up with relentless rallies.
In the women's singles, Ye, third seed here, made short work
of Hwa Chung Chaw of Chinese Taipei 11-1, 11-2 to reach the third
round along with all top seven seeded players.
South Korean top seed Bang Soo-hyun, yet to find an equal
challenger, easily produced a 11-1, 11-0 drubbing of Sholar
Olesia of Kazakhstan. Bang's compatriot and seeded number two Ra
Kyung-min dropped only three points in her demolition of Le Hyunh
Tu of Vietnam.
Indonesia secured two places in the women's singles through
teenagers Cindana and Lidya Djaelawijaya. Cindana faced little
trouble in dispatching Yu Ling-shyu of Chinese Taipei 11-8, 11-8,
while fifth seed Lydia did not break any sweat as Inna Morozova
of Kazakhstan defaulted from the match.
In the men's singles, Indra Wijaya of Indonesia sets up a
third-round duel against Chinese number two Sun Jun after beating
lowly Zaw Win of Myanmar in yesterday's second round. Another
China-Indonesia third-round showdown will also pit defending
champion Dong Jiong and Arief.
Indonesian top seed Alan Budikusuma earlier secured his third
round place with an easy 15-1, 15-3 win over Ronald Magnaye of
the Philippines. (amd)
