Mixed Reactions from Residents over Cable Car Proposal in Puncak, Bogor
The Bogor Regency Government plans to build a cable car to tackle congestion on Jalan Raya Puncak, Bogor, West Java. The plan has drawn mixed responses from residents.
“In my opinion, the plan to build a cable car to overcome congestion in the Puncak area is not very effective. Because people who holiday in the Puncak area do not only visit recreational parks, but there are also those who simply holiday and rent villas,” said Muhamad Rifaldi when asked for his response to the cable car construction plan on Tuesday (25/8/2026).
Rifaldi is a resident of Megamendung District who now works in Depok and experiences traffic conditions on Jalan Raya Puncak almost every day. He said the cable car would not reach the destinations of tourists holidaying in villas because their locations are scattered across residential areas and hillsides.
“People who are simply on holiday by spending time in villas will definitely use private vehicles. Why? Because it is not possible for the cable car to directly access tourists to their destinations, especially for people holidaying in villas,” said Rifaldi.
Rifaldi agreed that there should be sustained efforts from the government to tackle congestion in the Puncak area. He would even prefer a toll road to be built, despite the high cost.
“Perhaps my suggestion is, rather than building a cable car, it would be better to widen the road or build a toll road that connects directly to the Puncak area,” said Rifaldi.
“But however, I strongly support the plan to resolve the congestion problem in Puncak. Because now it is not only on holidays, but on ordinary days Puncak is also congested,” he added.
Meanwhile, another resident named Danil (25) agreed with the cable car construction proposal in the Puncak area because he believes it can attract many tourists. This is expected to improve the local economy.
“I agree. Firstly, we can experience a new sensation of enjoying the beauty of the Puncak area with the cable car. Secondly, it can also attract more tourists. With the cable car in the Puncak area, people will come because they want to experience a new sensation,” said Danil when contacted separately.
“In my opinion, the impact on Puncak’s economy will also be good with the many tourists coming to Puncak,” he added.
Danil hopes that transport planning and congestion management will be balanced with the arrangement of the local economic area.
“However, it would be better if traders or stalls are provided with tidy places to sell by the local government. They should also be placed in strategic locations so that shopping places or stalls are focused in one place, so they do not disrupt traffic,” said Danil.
Previously reported, Deputy Chairman of Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives Syaiful Huda assessed that the cable car construction proposal in the Puncak area, Bogor, needs to be seriously studied if it is intended to function as public transport. According to him, the cable car will not be effective in overcoming congestion if it stands alone without being integrated with other transport modes.
Huda said the cable car can essentially support tourism development in the Puncak area. However, if its main purpose is as public transport, careful planning and engineering are required.
“The cable car context is roughly indeed to support tourist destinations. If the spirit is for transport, there are many things that must be prepared,” Huda told journalists on Tuesday (25/8/2026).
“If the context is to support tourism development, I think it is even a necessity. However, if the context is for public transport, it requires quite serious engineering. And all parties must not be half-hearted,” he added.
