A smooth start was recorded by the mixed doubles pair from different countries, Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja (Indonesia) and Hee Yong Kai Terry (Singapore), as they began their journey in the 2026 German Open badminton tournament.

Competing at the Westenergie Sporthalle, Mulheim, on Wednesday (26/2), the pair secured a ticket to the round of 16 after defeating the Swiss representatives, Yann Orteu/Caroline Racloz, with a convincing score of 21-8 and 21-16.

Terry admitted to being satisfied with their performance, which allowed them to control the match from the first point. Optimal physical condition was the main key to their success in overcoming their opponents’ strategies in this round of 32.

“Overall, the performance is still in line with expectations, and we were able to control the match from the start,” Terry said in a statement.

Although they won in straight sets, Terry did not want to be complacent. He realized that the challenges in the next round would be much more difficult, so physical recovery and analysis of the opponents’ strategies through video recordings became the main agenda before returning to the field tomorrow.

Regarding his adaptation with Gloria, the Singaporean badminton player felt very helped by his partner’s skill in maintaining the front area.

“She (Gloria) is indeed very good at the front game, so she can help a lot and cover my game. So my job is just to work hard on the field to complement each other,” he added.

In line with Terry, Gloria was grateful for this positive result. According to her, the game pattern they implemented on the field went according to the plan that had been prepared before the match. She emphasized the importance of mental readiness and mindset to face the increasingly competitive knockout phase.

“So now we just need to focus on preparing for the next match. Everything must be prepared well, starting from mindset, physical, to mental,” said Gloria.

Regarding the challenge of playing as a new combination pair with limited time to practice together, Gloria explained that intense communication is the key to building chemistry. They continue to strive to maximize every moment on the field to understand each other’s movements.

“Each other’s playing patterns are already quite understood, we know where to move and what to do. Not too many technical obstacles on the field, maybe more on the non-technical aspects that need to be further improved,” she concluded. (E-3)

In the German Open match, Tiwi/Fadia defeated the Danish representatives, Kathrine Vang/Mette Werge, with a convincing score of 21-8 and 21-14.

The pair Jafar Hidayatullah/Felisha Alberta Nathaniel Pasaribu successfully advanced to the quarter-finals of the German Open.
