Mitsubishi to introduce new compact Pajero SUV

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Mitsubishi has announced that it will expand the scope of the Pajero brand, which will no longer be limited to full-size SUV models, but will also encompass compact or small SUV models.

“Moving forward, with the latest generation of Pajero as the mainstay of our product range, we will expand the Pajero family to include compact and small SUVs,” said Keisuke Kishiura, President and Chief Operating Officer of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, as reported by CarExpert on Friday (4/9).

Kishiura did not provide further information regarding the new models under the Pajero label, although teaser images displayed at the event showed two boxy vehicles covered in cloth.

The Mitsubishi president’s statement follows reports published by Nikkei Asia suggesting that Mitsubishi will launch an SUV similar in size to the Toyota RAV4 in 2028 or 2029. This vehicle may be marketed as an off-road capable alternative to the Mitsubishi Outlander, sharing certain components but utilising a newly developed proprietary platform.

Mitsubishi possesses mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid systems that could be adapted from the Outlander for this compact SUV. The company is also reportedly working on a new hybrid powertrain for use in upcoming models, such as the next-generation ASX.

Nikkei Asia also reported that a new kei-class model bearing the Pajero name is expected to be launched around 2030.
