Mitigating the risks of the extreme climate phenomenon, El Niño Godzilla

Scientists from around the world, including those in Indonesia, believe that this year’s weather and climate conditions will face the challenges of long and severe droughts caused by El Niño. Due to the potentially heavy impact, scientists have referred to this year’s drought conditions and temperature increases as ‘El Niño Godzilla’.

For Indonesia, the shift in rain clouds brings quite serious consequences. Instead of experiencing a normal dry season, the country is facing much drier and more extreme conditions.

Identifying the arrival of El Niño Godzilla early provides a significant advantage, as it allows time for preparation. Mitigation does not mean we can stop this natural phenomenon, but rather how we minimise its impact so that it does not escalate into a major disaster.
