Paint manufacturer PT Avia Avian Tbk (Avian Brands) has strengthened its commitment to environmental sustainability by planting over 6,000 mangrove trees at Pantai Martajasah, Bangkalan, East Java. The initiative, conducted in February 2026, represents a concrete step by the company in climate change mitigation and coastal area protection.

Unlike typical planting activities, this programme includes nursery support and training for local communities. The objective is to ensure the sustainability of mangrove ecosystems from upstream to downstream, beginning with seedling processes and extending to long-term maintenance.

Robert Christian Tanoko, Director of Operations and Development at PT Avia Avian Tbk, emphasised that this initiative is part of the company’s ecological investment strategy to offset emissions from operational activities.

“We view mangrove planting not merely as a ceremonial activity, but as a long-term ecological investment. Avian Brands seeks to take responsibility for emissions whilst providing tangible environmental benefits,” Robert stated.

The Bangkalan initiative is also being prepared to support nature-based carbon capture schemes. Mangrove ecosystems are known to have significantly higher carbon storage capacity compared to terrestrial forests, making them strategically important in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Beyond carbon sequestration functions, this rehabilitation is also aimed at preserving biodiversity. The Bangkalan coastal area is expected to become a safe habitat for various species listed on the IUCN Red List and serve as a breeding area for marine fauna.

Through strengthening community capacity in mangrove management, Avian Brands hopes to create economic independence for coastal residents. Communities are not only engaged in planting but are also equipped with technical expertise in nursery management and maintenance that can add economic value locally.

“This integrated approach aligns with the company’s commitment to creating balance between business growth, environmental conservation, and community welfare,” Robert concluded.
