Misunderstanding Behind Viral Confrontation Between Brigadier General and Marathon Marshal in Yogyakarta
The public relations office of Korem 072/Pamungkas has clarified the viral incident involving its commander, Brigadier General TNI Yuniar Dwi Hantono, and a marshal at the Mandiri Jogja Marathon 2026. The altercation, which circulated widely on social media, stemmed from a misunderstanding regarding a missing race bib.
Head of Public Relations for Korem 072/Pamungkas, Mayor Inf Suwito, stated that the incident was purely a misunderstanding and that both parties have since reconciled. “It was just a misunderstanding, and they have already forgiven each other,” Suwito explained when contacted on Monday (22/6/2026).
Suwito elaborated that Brigadier General Yuniar attended the event with his family and an aide, using four officially registered general admission tickets. “Brigadier General TNI Yuniar Dwi Hantono, along with his wife, one child, and an aide, participated in the event using four general tickets they possessed and were officially registered like other participants,” he detailed.
However, the aide’s race bib reportedly detached and fell off during the run. Following the incident, the event organiser and the Danrem immediately communicated and clarified the matter directly. “Based on the explanation obtained, the aide accompanying the Danrem also participated from the start using a participant number (BIB). However, during the event, the number is suspected to have fallen off while on a crowded track, causing a misunderstanding during the inspection by the official,” he continued.
According to Suwito, all parties understand that the incident was purely a technical issue on the ground and it has been resolved amicably. “We appreciate the professionalism of the committee and officials who carried out their duties according to procedure to maintain order during the event, while also respecting the organiser’s swift action in clarifying the matter so that no prolonged misunderstanding occurred in the public sphere,” he stated.
“In principle, the relationship between Korem 072/Pamungkas and the event organiser remains positive. We hope the public can view this incident proportionally and not associate it with other matters inconsistent with the facts,” he concluded.
The 25-second viral video showed a person, referred to as the Danrem’s aide, holding a mobile phone and being pulled off the track by a marshal. The marshal’s action was taken because the individual was not wearing a BIB or chest number. Shortly after, the Danrem appeared while running and forcibly pulled his aide back to continue running. A tug-of-war ensued between the marshal and the Danrem, with the Danrem pointing at the marshal after pulling his aide back a second time. A post accompanying the video on X, uploaded by the account @txtruangpodcast, read: “At the Mandiri Jogja Marathon 2026, a person without a bib number was asked to leave the track by a committee official. Not long after, a runner forced that person to re-enter the track. Respect for the committee.”
