Missile Stocks Dwindle to Alarming Levels, US Military Scrambles for Exit from Iran War

After around six months of war with Iran, Washington appears to be facing a dilemma more complicated than simply its ability to launch further military strikes.

The issue has now shifted to how to turn military superiority into rapid political advantage, while simultaneously seeking a way out of the war’s deadlock.

Amid President Donald Trump’s continued threats of escalation, senior military officials in closed-door meetings have begun discussing the limitations of air power, dwindling ammunition supplies, and the risk of widening the war.

At the same time, US leaders are searching for an exit that could give Trump a symbolic victory without opening the door to broader confrontation.

In recent weeks, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine has become increasingly open about the dilemma.

He has explained to Trump’s senior advisers that the United States needs to find a way out of the war because the military options available to escalate the conflict could potentially produce the opposite effect.

Air power alone, in his view, is unlikely to achieve the goals President Trump has announced.

Al Jazeera, cited on Sunday (9/8/2026), reported that a source familiar with the matter told CNN that “Caine is looking for a way out”.
