Misbakhun Says Economic Uncertainty Is Inevitable

Chairman of Commission XI of the House of Representatives (DPR), Mukhamad Misbakhun, said that macroeconomic uncertainty is a condition that will inevitably occur. ‘Moreover, the current geopolitical situation also provides an indicator that uncertainty occurs at all times,’ he said at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, on Wednesday, 20 May 2026.

Misbakhun noted that the uncertainty caused by geopolitics, for example, includes the stance of United States President Donald Trump on a ceasefire in the Iran conflict. Both Iran and the United States are still reluctant to pursue a ceasefire.

Reflecting on the conditions that trigger doubt, Misbakhun said the role of the government and the DPR is to ensure they can manage that uncertainty well. One of the ways is to be cautious in taking economic policy.

In addition to ensuring the control of economic uncertainty, Misbakhun emphasised the importance of considering opportunities and mitigating short- and medium-term risks. ‘Because in the long term, we cannot yet guarantee everything,’ he said.

Earlier, Acting President Director of the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IHSG) Jeffrey Hendrik responded to the decline of the Jakarta Composite Index in trading on Monday, 18 May 2026. In the morning, IHSG had fallen as much as 4 percent. ‘Certainly if we examine it, the uncertainty in our market remains quite high,’ Jeffrey said at the Indonesia Stock Exchange, Monday, 18 May 2026.

Nevertheless, he said the weakness of IHSG at the start of the week was in line with the global market conditions in Asia. During the long weekend last week, Asian markets also corrected.

Jeffrey stated that the sources of uncertainty at present include fluctuations in commodity prices, fluctuations in exchange rates in various countries, and the uncertainty of a resolution to conflicts in the Middle East. All these uncertainties, he said, affect IHSG movement.
