Misbakhun: Health Insurance Reform Helps Strengthen BPJS
During the Health Insurance Ecosystem Forum 2026, held by CNBC Indonesia, Mukhamad Misbakhun, Chairman of Commission XI of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), affirmed the legislature’s support for government efforts to reform the national health insurance ecosystem. The forum, themed ‘Reorganising the Health Insurance Ecosystem: New Regulations, Cost Control, and Service Model Transformation’, serves as a platform for regulators, associations, and insurance professionals to find solutions for accelerating industry transformation in Indonesia.
Misbakhun noted that increased public awareness of health insurance following the COVID-19 pandemic has been a primary driver for the growth of Indonesia’s health insurance ecosystem. Consequently, he emphasised the need for the government and regulators to align public insurance needs with industry growth through ecosystem improvements.
However, he highlighted that a surge in medical inflation within the healthcare sector, reaching 17.9%, has caused claims in the health insurance industry to rise by 100%, placing a significant burden on businesses. Improving the ecosystem is therefore essential to ensure that the public can receive maximum healthcare services. This improvement must encompass the needs of business players, policyholders, insurance agents, digital healthcare providers, third-party administrators (TPA), and hospitals. It is hoped that these enhancements in health insurance services will also strengthen the services and coverage of the government’s health insurance scheme, BPJS Kesehatan.
