Ministry Stresses Father's Role in Parenting Cannot Be Replaced by AI

Secretary of the Ministry of Population and Family Development, Budi Setiyono, has stressed the critical importance of a father’s role in parenting, asserting that his presence can never be replaced by artificial intelligence or AI. Budi stated that the biggest challenge facing Indonesian families today is no longer physical colonisation, but rather the dominance of digital algorithms, which have the potential to displace the role of parents, particularly fathers, in shaping a child’s character. He expressed concern that the presence of technology and AI could erode the quality of relationships within families while simultaneously weakening national values. He therefore hopes that the commemoration of National Family Day (Harganas) will not be merely ceremonial, but a momentum to recall the family values that have been the foundation of the nation since the struggle for independence. “A father’s duty is not only to earn a living, but also to be present to accompany his children, provide exemplary conduct, protection, and guide them in facing various threats of the times, ranging from drug abuse, youth violence such as ‘klitih’ and student brawls, to exposure to radicalism and behavioural deviations,” he said. He assessed that the presence of a father figure serves as the first bastion in building a child’s character and resilience so they are able to face various risks in the digital era. For children who grow up without a father’s presence, the government encourages the social environment to take on the role of a support system. Teachers, neighbours, extended family, religious leaders, caregivers, and community leaders are expected to provide assistance so that every child continues to receive attention, guidance, and protection. The 33rd National Family Day in 2026 carries the theme “Ayah Wajib Hadir” (Father Must Be Present) as a reminder of the irreplaceable role of a father.
