Ministry, Regional Government Coordinate to Monitor Handling of Child Sexual Abuse Case in North Sumatra

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA) has coordinated with the North Sumatra Provincial Government to ensure the handling of an alleged child sexual abuse case in Tanjung Balai proceeds in line with the child’s best interests.

“We have coordinated with the Women’s Empowerment, Child Protection and Family Planning Office (DP3AKB) of North Sumatra Province, the PPA Technical Implementation Unit (UPTD) of Tanjung Balai City, and the UPTD PPA of Asahan Regency to ensure the case is handled in accordance with the child’s best interests,” said PPPA Minister Arifah Fauzi in Jakarta on Thursday.

So far, the victim has received legal assistance, accompaniment during forensic and medical examinations, psychological services, and follow-up assessments according to his needs.

The Ministry of PPPA is also ensuring that psychosocial rehabilitation and protection of the victim’s identity continue throughout the legal proceedings until the victim recovers and can resume his life properly.

The victim is a 13-year-old boy residing in Asahan Regency.

The alleged criminal act took place in May 2026 in Tanjung Balai City and was reported to the Tanjung Balai Police on 19 May 2026.

The results of the medical examination corroborated the alleged sexual abuse of the victim.

The suspected perpetrator, identified by the initials DS (44), has now been named a suspect, whilst his wife, a teacher, remains a witness and is undergoing intensive questioning by investigators.

“The Ministry of PPPA respects the ongoing legal process and encourages the investigation to be conducted professionally, objectively and transparently, prioritising justice and the child’s best interests,” said Minister Arifatul Choiri Fauzi.
