Ministry prioritises academic community safety after NTT earthquake
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek) is prioritising the safety of the entire academic community while continuing to monitor developments in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that shook the Flores region on Saturday (15/8).
“In a disaster situation like this, the first thing we must ensure is the safety of the academic community. After that, we work together to ensure the education process can continue with the necessary adjustments,” said Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto when confirmed in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The minister stressed that human safety is the top priority in a disaster situation, while the education process must be maintained through adjustments according to conditions on the ground.
He expressed deep concern and sorrow over the disaster and gave special attention to the safety of the entire academic community at higher education institutions in the affected areas.
“Higher education institutions are not only places where the learning process takes place, but also part of the community ecosystem,” he said.
Minister Brian said Kemdiktisaintek continues to coordinate with the Higher Education Service Institution (LLDikti) Region XV, local governments, and related parties to ensure the condition of the academic community and higher education institutions in the affected areas.
Based on reports received by LLDikti Region XV as of 16 August 2026, a number of private universities have submitted initial information regarding the condition of campus facilities after the earthquake.
The Flores Bajawa Agricultural College (Stiper Bajawa) reported minor damage, while the ElBajo Commodus Polytechnic reported damage to ceiling sections in teaching and learning rooms within the campus building.
Separately, the Indonesian government affirmed its commitment to accelerating emergency response and recovery efforts following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck the Flores region.
Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno stated that the presence of ministers and agency heads in NTT since the first day of the incident reflects the government’s concern and commitment to supporting affected communities.
“Since the first day of the incident we have been in NTT to inspect the field and discuss accelerating recovery,” said the coordinating minister.
