The Ministry of Youth and Sports is taking a firm stance by pushing for the imposition of the severest sanctions, including a lifetime ban from the world of sports, against a coach with the initials HB who is suspected of committing sexual harassment and physical violence within the Indonesian Climbing Federation (FPTI).

This step is taken as a form of absolute protection for athletes who are the nation’s assets while also maintaining the dignity of national sports from immoral acts and violations of the law.

Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir expressed his deep concern and empathy for the athletes and their families who have been affected.

Erick emphasized that athletes are modern-day warriors who should receive guarantees of safety and comfort during their training process to uphold the honour of the nation.

“They must be protected. They must feel safe. They represent the dignity of the Indonesian nation because they are modern warriors in this era,” said Erick in his statement.

The government’s commitment to supporting victims is demonstrated by the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ commitment to providing legal assistance and psychological services.

Erick also opens the door wide for all athletes in all sports who have experienced similar incidents to bravely report through the official complaint channel at [email protected].

“You are not alone. We open the door wide to listen, help, and protect all Indonesian athletes if anyone has ever been or is currently a victim of sexual or physical harassment or violence,” he stressed.

The ministry appreciates the swift action taken by the FPTI in forming an investigative team to thoroughly investigate this case.

If the allegations of sexual and physical violence are proven, the Ministry of Youth and Sports urges that the legal process be carried out in accordance with the applicable Law on Criminal Acts of Sexual Violence (UU TPKS).

The Ministry of Youth and Sports reminds all national sports federations to prioritize the aspect of athlete protection.

The dedication and sacrifices of athletes in pursuing international achievements should not be tarnished by despicable acts that damage the character development of young people.

Currently, a more comprehensive special complaint channel is being prepared so that the space for perpetrators of violence in the sports environment is further closed.

The FPTI held a national selection (seleknes) for athletes for the 2025 climbing national training camp at the Santika Harapan Indah Hotel, Bekasi, West Java.

The Indonesian climbing team has the potential to bring home four medals through the men’s and women’s speed and lead events at the 2026 Asian Games.

Ardana Cikal Damarwulan, who made his debut at the 2025 SEA Games, immediately surprised the public by winning a gold medal in the men’s lead event.

The addition of these two golds brings Indonesia’s medal count to 20 gold, 28 silver, and 24 bronze.

For the SEA Games, the majority of climbing athletes who competed were young climbers, in accordance with the regulations set by the organizers.

Climbing is one of the sports that will rely on junior athletes.
