Ministry of Youth and Sports and BKPM Synergise to Accelerate Licensing and Investment in the Sports Industry
Jakarta, InfoPublik – The Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) of the Republic of Indonesia has established cooperation with the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) to strengthen the implementation of risk-based business licensing and encourage investment development in the sports sector.
The cooperation was marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir together with Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Head of BKPM Rosan Roeslani at the Head Office of the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM, South Jakarta, Friday (28/8/2026).
Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir said the cooperation is part of efforts to develop national economic potential through the sports industry and sport tourism. According to him, this step is in line with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to optimise various national economic potentials in supporting the target of 8 percent economic growth.
“Because the perception of sports in Indonesia today is still a financing problem, a cost centre. Whereas talking about the sport industry and sport tourism is certainly about revenue and investment,” said Erick Thohir.
He said the sports sector should not only be viewed as an activity that requires financing. The sports industry, according to Erick, has great potential to create economic value through investment, event organisation, tourism, and various other supporting sectors.
Globally, Erick Thohir said the value of the sports industry reaches around USD521 billion, equivalent to approximately Rp8 thousand trillion, and continues to grow. This potential, he said, is one of the foundations for Kemenpora to build synergy with the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM.
One focus of the cooperation is to accelerate the business licensing process in the sports sector, which has been considered one of the challenges for industry players and organisers of sports activities. “Thank you for the support of Mr Rosan’s team, today we signed an agreement on how to accelerate the licensing system that has often been an obstacle,” said Minister Erick.
Kemenpora is currently also entrusted as the ministry responsible for the Indonesian Standard Industrial Classification (KBLI) for the sports sector, which implements Risk-Based Business Licensing (PBBR) services for various types of sports businesses.
Furthermore, Minister Erick said Kemenpora together with the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM have followed up on discussions regarding the development of licensing services through the Online Single Submission (OSS) system.
In addition, Kemenpora is also preparing a Sport in Indonesia platform that will contain a calendar of various sports activities up to 2029. “Alhamdulillah, after the results of meetings and discussions with Mr Rosan, we have created a pilot website for OSS which was followed up yesterday. We also created the Sport in Indonesia website, so our sports event calendar up to 2029,” said Erick.
According to the Minister, ease of licensing is one of the important factors to attract investment and expand the organisation of various sports activities in Indonesia. He hopes the cooperation can be a first step in building a more integrated sports investment ecosystem and providing certainty for business actors. “So this cooperation I think is the forerunner, an initiation that we agreed together as something very positive for Indonesia and helps investment,” added Erick Thohir.
Meanwhile, Minister of Investment and Downstreaming/Head of BKPM Rosan Roeslani said the sports industry has great potential in driving economic growth. According to Rosan, the sports sector in Indonesia still has large room for development compared to several other countries that have made sports a high-economic-value industry.
He assessed that organising a sports event not only has an impact on the sports sector, but also creates a multiplier effect on various economic sectors. “Organising sports events has an impact not only on the city that hosts the activity, but also has an overall impact on the economy,” said Rosan.
According to him, organising sports events can have an impact on the tourism, hospitality, transportation, culinary, MSME sectors, and various other supporting industries. “Because it is not only from the sports aspect, but this also has an impact on tourism and other industries. So of course we from the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming want to ensure also in terms of licensing, in terms of assistance, we can provide the best,” said Rosan.
Through this synergy, Kemenpora and the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM are expected to build a more conducive sports industry ecosystem, starting from simplifying licensing, providing assistance to business actors, to developing investment opportunities.
The development of the sports industry is also expected to strengthen regional economies through the organisation of various sports activities and the development of sport tourism. This effort is also part of strengthening new economic potential through the sports sector, by encouraging investment, creating economic activity, and involving various supporting sectors.
The signing of the MoU was also witnessed by Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Taufik Hidayat.
