Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection: Strengthening UPT PPA requires central and regional government cooperation
Deputy Minister of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Veronica Tan has emphasised that strengthening the Technical Implementation Unit for the Protection of Women and Children (UPT PPA) must be carried out jointly by central and regional governments.
“Strengthening UPT PPA needs to be done together between central and regional governments, starting from institutional arrangements, human resources, service capacity, cross-sector coordination, to budget support,” said Deputy Minister Veronica Tan in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.
She made the remarks during a visit to the UPT PPA of Yogyakarta City.
On that occasion, she listened to the obstacles faced by the Yogyakarta City Office of Women’s Empowerment, Child Protection, Population Control, and Family Planning (DP3AP2KB) as well as the Yogyakarta City UPT PPA, while also seeking solutions regarding the support needed from the central government.
She stressed the importance of fully understanding the condition of services as a basis for determining the appropriate form of support.
“We must look at this UPT PPA openly, starting from its capacity, the number of cases that come in, the services provided, the number of human resources, to its coordination with the regional government and the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection. From there we can see what really needs to be strengthened,” said Veronica Tan.
She assessed that the Yogyakarta City UPT PPA has various practices and innovations that can serve as lessons for other regions.
According to her, the experience of regions that have built good services needs to be documented and developed so that it can become a reference in strengthening protection services for women and children in other areas.
“Regions that have already innovated and have good concepts must be observed and studied. If they are indeed good, we can use them as examples to be applied elsewhere. However, strengthening UPT PPA must also be supported by a strong institutional position and career ladder so that it can carry out cross-sector coordination and intervention more optimally,” said Veronica Tan.
