As an effort to improve safety for logistics transport drivers, the Directorate General of Land Transportation under the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) is holding Technical Guidance (Bimtek) on Competency for Drivers of General Goods Transport Companies (Safety Driving).

Held at the Surabaya Aviation Polytechnic in East Java, this event is organised in collaboration between the Directorate of Road Transport Facilities and Safety and PT Gaya Makmur Mobil (GMM), attended by 38 goods transport companies, consisting of 58 drivers and 20 company management representatives.

Director of Road Transport Facilities and Safety Yusuf Nugroho stated that this event represents the government’s commitment alongside business actors in ensuring safety in the goods transport industry, which plays a crucial role in the national economy.

“The goods transport industry plays an important role in the economy, but data from Korlantas shows that 10 percent of road accidents involve goods transport. Accidents can affect the national economy because the victims are mostly of productive age, causing material damage, and impacting transport service provision,” said Yusuf in his official statement on Friday (17/4/2026).

Yusuf explained that besides driver skills, the implementation of comprehensive and coordinated safety governance is needed through the Public Transport Company Safety Management System (SMK-PAU).

“So besides drivers, education on the importance of implementing SMK-PAU is also given to company management levels,” he said.

“The role and support of company management is no less important. It is hoped that all goods transport companies can implement Standard Operating Procedures consistently and in accordance with government regulations,” said Yusuf.

Therefore, continued Yusuf, through this event, it is hoped that company management can regulate drivers’ working hours in accordance with applicable rules. Work hour regulation is considered important to prevent fatigue, thereby reducing the potential for accidents and fatalities.

In addition to receiving theoretical materials, participants also conducted practical safety driving sessions as well as interview sessions for competency assessment.

It is hoped that through this event, cooperation and synergy will be established to realise safer, more efficient, and sustainable goods transport services.
