Ministry of Transportation Prepares Water Taxi Service in Bali, Airport to Canggu in 30 Minutes
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Ministry of Transportation is preparing the development of a water taxi service in Bali. This mode of transport is aimed at reducing congestion in tourist areas, particularly in Badung Regency.
Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi stated that this plan is a follow-up to the working visit by the DPR RI’s Commission V. Other agendas include the construction of a pier at Celukan Bawang Port in Buleleng.
“There are two main discussion points that we will convey, namely the plan to develop the water taxi and the construction of a pier at Celukan Bawang Port in Gerokgak, North Bali,” said Dudy during a Working Meeting with the DPR RI’s Commission V at the Parliament Building on Wednesday (8/4/2026).
“The water taxi is one of the alternative solutions in integrating land, sea, and air transportation to reduce traffic density in Bali Province, especially in Badung Regency,” he explained.
The main route connects Ngurah Rai Airport with the Canggu tourist area. This service is intended as a faster mobility option.
“The water taxi can connect Ngurah Rai Airport with the Canggu tourist area as an efficient, environmentally friendly mobility option that supports the tourism sector in Bali,” he said.
The current land travel time ranges from one to two hours. The water taxi mode is projected to cut the travel time to around 30 minutes.
“Based on field observations, the land travel time from Ngurah Rai Airport to Canggu is one to two hours, whereas with the water taxi, it is hoped to be only around 30 minutes,” he stated.
This project includes the construction of supporting infrastructure. Facilities include breakwaters to ensure operational safety in the waters.
The port locations are planned in the Ngurah Rai Airport area at Sekeh Beach and Berawa Beach in Canggu.
