Jakarta — The Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) has dispatched 340 free mudik (homecoming) participants to Aceh and Medan as part of the 1447 Hijriah Eid mudik programme, utilising land transport to facilitate travel particularly for residents heading to disaster-affected regions in November 2025.

In a written statement received in Jakarta on Monday, Muiz Thohir, Director of Road Transport at the Directorate General of Land Transport, Kemenhub, stated that the 2026 Free Mudik Programme to Sumatra was established to ease the public’s homecoming journey, particularly to regions affected by the late-2025 disaster.

“In accordance with the directive of the Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi, this free mudik service to Aceh and Medan is an effort to alleviate the burden on residents wishing to travel home, especially for those with family members in disaster-affected areas,” Muiz said during the departure of mudik participants at the Type A Terminal (TTA) Pondok Cabe in South Tangerang, Banten.

Muiz stated that the 2026 Free Eid Transport Programme to Aceh and Medan was established to ensure the safety of residents returning to their hometowns from various regions.

The government is facilitating safe, secure and smooth travel for the public during the Eid mudik period. The programme also discourages residents from using motorcycles during mudik due to safety concerns.

Kemenhub has provided ten bus units to transport a total of 340 free mudik programme participants heading to Aceh and Medan, departing from Type A Terminal Pondok Cabe.

In addition to Aceh and Medan, the free mudik programme to Sumatra this year will also target West Sumatra, with departures scheduled for 17–18 March 2026 from TTA Jatijajar, TTA Pulo Gebang, TTA Kampung Rambutan, and TTA Poris Plawad.

“Today we are sending our fellow citizens who will travel home towards Sumatra, namely Aceh and Medan. God willing, tomorrow we will also send our fellow citizens who will travel to Padang at Pulo Gebang Terminal,” Muiz said.

The government endeavours to continue providing free mudik services to alleviate the financial burden on residents wishing to travel home. He also expressed appreciation to all parties involved in implementing the 2026 Kemenhub Free Mudik Programme.

“We hope the free mudik programme can proceed smoothly, and hopefully next year we will also have the opportunity to organise it again,” he added.

Muiz thanked the South Tangerang City Government, the TNI-Polri (military and police), and land transport organisations (Organda) that facilitated the vehicles used for this year’s free mudik journey.

He expressed confidence that the journey of free mudik participants from Pondok Cabe Type A Terminal to Aceh and Sumatra would proceed safely and smoothly.

“Hopefully this mudik journey will proceed smoothly and safely reach their destinations so that they can gather with their relatives during the Eid celebration,” Muiz said.

Meanwhile, Vice Mayor of South Tangerang Pilar Saga Ichsan appreciated Kemenhub’s success in implementing the free mudik programme year after year.

He stated that the free mudik programme represents a commitment from the central and regional governments to ensure residents’ travel home is safe and smooth.

“This free mudik programme is a manifestation of South Tangerang City Government’s commitment together with Kemenhub to ensure mudik is safe, comfortable, orderly and smooth. Hopefully all participants can reunite with their families in their respective hometowns,” Pilar said.
