Ministry of Transportation and UK Launch Three Strategic Maritime Decarbonisation Documents

The Directorate General of Sea Transportation at the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) is strengthening maritime sector decarbonisation through a strategic collaboration with the British Government. The partnership, forged via the UK Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions (UK PACT) programme, has resulted in the launch of three strategic documents to accelerate the transition towards a low-carbon maritime ecosystem in Indonesia. The launch involved the Institute for Natural Resources, Energy, and Environmental Management (IREEM) as the implementing partner. The three documents are designed as complementary technical instruments to support more environmentally friendly port and shipping operations. Secretary of the Directorate General of Sea Transportation, Lollan Panjaitan, stressed that this initiative is not merely about regulatory compliance, but a strategic move to maintain the competitiveness of national shipping. “Our role is to ensure that Indonesia’s fleet and ports continue moving towards green shipping and green ports,” Lollan said on Tuesday (14/7). This step is in line with Indonesia’s 2060 Net Zero Emission (NZE) target and Minister of Transportation Decree Number KM 8 of 2023. Furthermore, the programme supports the energy efficiency mandate in Government Regulation No. 33 of 2025 and the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) decarbonisation targets. UK Minister-Counsellor for Development at the British Embassy Jakarta, Peter Rajadiston, expressed pride in the partnership. According to him, the initiative strengthens the “MELAJU” sustainable infrastructure programme championed by the UK to drive green growth in Indonesia. “These guidelines and studies will strengthen the foundation for evidence-based decision-making and strategic investment for a more resilient maritime ecosystem,” Peter said. IREEM Executive Director, Arief Yunan, added that the documents are designed to bridge the government’s ambitious targets with real-world implementation. Collaboration between government, industry, and technical institutions is considered key to the success of this transformation.
