Ministry of Transport Urged to Accelerate Railway Signalling Integration
The Chairman of Commission V of the House of Representatives (DPR), Lasarus, has requested that the Ministry of Transport accelerate the integration of railway signalling systems. This integration aims to improve train travel safety and prevent the recurrence of railway accidents.
Lasarus assessed that the integration of signalling systems is an urgent necessity, particularly following the collision between the Bromo Anggrek train and a Commuter Line (KRL) at Bekasi Station on Monday night, 27 April 2026, which resulted in 15 fatalities.
“I hope the signalling integration can be handled swiftly, Mr Minister,” Lasarus stated during a working meeting with Minister of Transport Dudy Purwagandhi on Thursday, 4 June 2026.
He urged the Ministry of Transport to resolve the issue immediately. According to him, if the Ministry is unable to manage it optimally, the authority to manage the signalling system could be considered for transfer to PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), known as KAI.
Lasarus also touched upon findings regarding communication systems and train movement orders that have become a focus following the Bekasi accident. “Whether this authority remains with the Ministry of Transport or, if not, should simply be transferred to PT KAI,” he said.
According to Lasarus, the signalling issue was one of the critical findings from the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) investigation into the train accident at Bekasi Timur Station.
He revealed that the signalling systems currently in use consist of various technologies and different manufacturers, making the integration process difficult. “I have received information that the procurement of these signals involves different technologies. Some originate from Japan, some from China, and some are produced by LEN,” he noted.
Lasarus stated that this condition must be rectified so that the signalling system can be integrated to support more optimal railway operational safety. Furthermore, he highlighted the lack of a clear separation between the functions of operator and regulator within the railway sector.
Consequently, Lasarus proposed that railway operational management be centralised under PT KAI to ensure that decision-making and operational handling can proceed more effectively.
