Ministry of Transport Says Group Mudik Can Reduce Accident Risk
Jakarta — The Ministry of Transport has praised the initiative of private companies implementing free mudik programmes for the public, particularly for motorcycle riders.
The programme typically facilitates travellers to depart using buses, whilst their motorcycles are transported using trucks.
Yusuf Nugroho, Director of Road Transport Facilities and Safety at the Directorate General of Land Transport of the Ministry of Transport, stated that the government supports various collaborative programmes aimed at improving road transport safety.
“We support the realisation of improved road transport safety. Certainly, this could be a role model or example that other private parties can follow to collaborate in achieving road transport safety,” Yusuf said in Jakarta, when asked for comment last weekend.
According to him, the government cannot work alone in improving road traffic safety. Therefore, involvement of various parties, including the private sector and the public, is an important factor.
Beyond improving safety, Yusuf stated, the free mudik programme can also help regulate vehicle flow distribution during the Eid transport period.
“This certainly has an impact not merely as a measure to reduce accidents, but also on traffic distribution itself, so that its smooth flow can be maintained well,” he explained.
“In other words, if the distribution is arranged from the outset and departures are regulated, it will reduce congestion at certain times,” Yusuf said.
