Ministry of Social Affairs to Meet Needs of Conflict Victims and Earthquake Survivors in North Maluku
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Social Affairs (Kemensos) is prepared to meet the needs of residents impacted by the social conflict in Central Halmahera Regency and the earthquake victims on Batang Dua Island, Ternate City, North Maluku. “Bismillah, we will follow up, Mr Deputy Governor. We support whatever is needed,” said Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf during an audience with North Maluku Deputy Governor Sarbin Sehe at the Ministry of Social Affairs office in Jakarta on Tuesday. The social conflict occurred in West Patani Subdistrict, Central Halmahera Regency, involving residents of Banemo Village and Sibenpopo Village, triggered by the discovery of a resident’s body on Thursday (2/4) in the early hours. Based on reports received by the Ministry of Social Affairs, the incident escalated into clashes between residents, resulting in fatalities, injuries, and damage to several houses. Saifullah emphasised that his ministry would promptly address the needs of the affected residents as part of post-conflict handling efforts. He also assured fulfilment of needs for earthquake disaster victims, such as logistical assistance and post-disaster trauma recovery. The meeting also discussed the progress of constructing permanent People’s School buildings. There are two permanent People’s School buildings under construction. The first is located in Rioribati Village, West Halmahera Regency, and Kukumutuk Village, North Halmahera Regency. The construction of these dormitory-based educational facilities, specifically for children from poor to vulnerable poor families, is being handled by a team from the Ministry of Public Works (PU). Nevertheless, Saifullah requested that local governments also monitor the construction progress, which is targeted for completion in July. “Insya Allah, I want to see the People’s School construction,” he said.
