Ministry of Social Affairs Ready to Switch to Electric Vehicles: How About the Budget?
JAKARTA - Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf (Gus Ipul) stated that his ministry is prepared to shift vehicle usage from fuel-based to electric vehicles to enhance energy efficiency.
“Insha’Allah, we will transform towards electric cars or electric motorcycles,” Saifullah said when met after the New Work Culture Team Building event at the Ministry of Social Affairs office in Central Jakarta on Monday (6/4/2026).
Saifullah assured that the budget is available for operating electric cars at the Ministry of Social Affairs office and the People’s School (SR).
“So first, we do have a budget for the operational vehicles of the People’s School. But with this new policy, we will try to procure them if we need to buy cars,” Saifullah said.
“We are now prioritising electric cars, especially for Jakarta and other major cities. For certain regions, they may still use fuel-based or conventional cars,” he added.
If electric car operations are implemented, Gus Ipul mentioned that conventional cars would be relocated to areas with limited charging infrastructure.
“If necessary, the cars currently in Jakarta can be moved to some regions that are not yet ready for the electric vehicle ecosystem,” he said.
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that the policy to cut domestic official trips by 50% and international ones by 70% aims to promote a more efficient, productive, and digital-based work pattern.
Besides official trips, the Government is also implementing mobility efficiency through a 50% restriction on the use of official vehicles, except for operations and electric vehicles.
“Mobility efficiency includes a 50% restriction on official vehicle use, except for operations and electric vehicles,” Airlangga said during an online press conference on Tuesday (31/3/2026).
On the other hand, the Government encourages greater use of public transportation.
Not only at the central level, regional governments are also urged to adapt mobility control policies according to their respective regional characteristics, including expanding car-free day implementations.
