The Ministry of Social Affairs (Kemensos) and the Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP) are collaborating to renovate the homes of parents of People’s School students that are unfit for habitation. This agreement was announced by Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf, known as Gus Ipul, following a meeting with Housing and Settlement Areas Minister Maruarar Sirait and her team at the Kemensos office in Central Jakarta on Monday, 11 May 2026. Gus Ipul stated that the People’s School serves as a miniature model for poverty alleviation, as enshrined in Presidential Instruction Number 8 of 2025. “Where the children attend school, their parents are empowered and supported through other strategic presidential programmes. One of these is assistance for families or parents of People’s School students with the construction or renovation of unfit homes to make them more habitable, supported by the Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas,” said Gus Ipul. Kemensos has proposed renovating 10,000 homes owned by parents of People’s School students this year. Gus Ipul revealed that 5,000 of these homes have been confirmed eligible for the renovation programme, while the remainder are still undergoing verification and validation. One of the requirements is clear ownership status for the land and home, which must be personally owned. “Currently, there are 5,000 with clear ownership status. Ground checks have been conducted in the field, and they have been confirmed to meet the criteria. There are certain conditions that must be fulfilled, primarily regarding ownership, including land ownership,” explained Gus Ipul. Gus Ipul elaborated that the renovation process will be carried out in stages. Meanwhile, for homes of parents of students that do not meet the criteria due to tenancy, borrowing, or renting status, alternative solutions will be sought. “We will find solutions for those who do not yet meet the criteria. We will strive to find solutions. Perhaps we will collaborate with various parties,” he said. Gus Ipul also expressed gratitude for the support from the Ministry of PKP regarding this programme. He noted that Minister Maruarar has shown serious attention to the implementation of the People’s School. “I thank Mr Ara for allocating a significant portion of the programme for the families or parents of People’s School students,” said Gus Ipul. On the same occasion, Housing and Settlement Areas Minister Maruarar Sirait affirmed that her ministry strongly supports the renovation programme for the homes of People’s School students’ parents. She stated that in 2025, the Ministry of PKP had also provided support to renovate 1,000 homes of such parents. She added that this year, the Ministry of PKP will renovate the homes as proposed by Kemensos, namely 10,000 homes. The renovations will be funded from the Ministry of PKP’s budget. “So we have decided to allocate the number requested by the Ministry of Social Affairs, 10,000 (homes), we agree and support (renovating) 10,000 (homes). And we are determined that this programme must be very successful,” she said. She requested that Kemensos promptly submit the data for the homes to be renovated to the Ministry of PKP. “The data should arrive no later than 1 June (2026), if possible. Please hurry so we can move quickly,” she explained.
