Ministry of SMEs requests term 'pelaku' be replaced with 'pengusaha'

The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (UMKM) considers the term ‘pelaku’ (actor/perpetrator) for people involved in UMKM to have negative connotations, and therefore it should be replaced with ‘pengusaha’ (entrepreneur) UMKM.

“So, as directed by the Minister, the term ‘pelaku usaha’ tends to have connotations towards negative things. Therefore, to encourage UMKM entrepreneurs, we are replacing it with ‘pengusaha’,” said Berry Fauzy, Head of the Micro Enterprise Supply Chain Division at the Ministry of UMKM, in Tanjung Selor, North Kalimantan, on Tuesday.

Berry Fauzy made the remarks before UMKM entrepreneurs while speaking at a Targeted Business Meeting organised by the Provincial Government of North Kalimantan at the Governor’s Office Hall.

According to him, changing the designation to ‘pengusaha’ will certainly increase the spirit of doing business.

He continued that some people feel that being in UMKM is a matter of compulsion. In fact, UMKM is a choice for doing business.

Therefore, whether it is a micro, small, medium or other scale enterprise, the Ministry of UMKM is encouraging the use of the name ‘pengusaha UMKM’ so that they can be enthusiastic in carrying out their business.

“We are socialising all of this nationally, including in North Kalimantan at this Targeted Business Meeting attended by UMKM entrepreneurs,” said Berry.
