JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Ministry of Religious Affairs’ team responsible for astronomical calculations and observations stated that the position of the crescent moon during the determination of the beginning of Dzulhijjah 1447 Hijri is in an ideal condition for observation.

Based on the results of the calculations presented at the isbat session, all regions of Indonesia meet the MABIMS criteria for crescent visibility, both in terms of altitude and elongation, on Sunday (17 May 2026).

“On this Hijri day, the altitude across Indonesia ranges from 3.29 to 6.95 degrees, and the elongation ranges from 8.91 to 10.60 degrees. Throughout the territory of the Republic of Indonesia, the position of the crescent moon meets the MABIMS criteria or crescent visibility,” said Cecep Nurwendaya, from the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ team, on Sunday.

“This is the criterion we recognise. So, at sunset, the crescent moon already meets the MABIMS criteria if its altitude is above 3 degrees and its elongation is 6.4 degrees,” said Cecep.

Cecep affirmed that all regions of Indonesia meet the requirements for crescent visibility based on the mapping conducted by the team.

“All regions of Indonesia appear green in colour [on the map],” he said.

“In Merauke, it is 8.91 degrees. In Sabang, it is 10.62 degrees. Whereas the minimum requirement is already well above the MABIMS criteria at 6.4 degrees,” Cecep added.

Nevertheless, the determination of Eid al-Adha will only be made based on the results of the isbat session and announced on Sunday evening at 19:00 WIB.
