Ministry of Religious Affairs Predicts Eid al-Adha in 2026 to Fall on May 27th, New Moon of Dhu al-Hijjah Meets Requirements
The schedule for Eid al-Adha 1447 Hijri is becoming clearer. The Ministry of Religious Affairs revealed that calculations indicate the beginning of Dhu al-Hijjah will fall on Monday, May 18th, 2026.
If this prediction is confirmed during the isbat session, Muslims in Indonesia may celebrate Eid al-Adha on Wednesday, May 27th, 2026.
This certainty is based on the results of monitoring the position of the new moon across various regions of Indonesia. The government states that the current position of the new moon meets the agreed-upon visibility standards among MABIMS member countries.
A member of the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ New Moon Observation Team, Cecep Nurwendaya, said that all regions of Indonesia meet the minimum requirements for the height and elongation of the new moon.
“The position of the new moon throughout the territory of the Republic of Indonesia meets the criteria of a minimum lunar altitude of 3 degrees and a minimum elongation of 6.4 degrees, so the first day of Dhu al-Hijjah 1447 Hijri will coincide with Monday Kliwon, May 18th, 2026,” he said on Sunday, May 17th, 2026.
He explained that the height of the new moon on the day of observation was recorded at between 3.29 degrees and 6.95 degrees throughout Indonesia. Meanwhile, the elongation of the new moon is in the range of 8.91 degrees to 10.62 degrees.
With this position, it is considered very likely that the new moon will be visible or meet the criteria for observation.
“Therefore, theoretically, the position of the new moon at the beginning of Dhu al-Hijjah 1447 Hijri on the day of observation makes it highly probable that it can be observed,” he said.
