JAKARTA — The Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) will hold an isbat session to determine Eid al-Fitr (Lebaran) 1447 Hijriah on Thursday, 19 March 2026. The isbat session for establishing Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah will take place at the H.M. Rasjidi Auditorium, Ministry of Religious Affairs office, Central Jakarta.

The isbat session will involve various stakeholders, including astronomy experts from the Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), planetariums, observatories, representatives of Islamic civil society organisations, and other relevant institutions, according to Abu Rokhmad, Director General of Islamic Community Guidance at Kemenag, in a statement on Monday (2 March 2026).

Abu stated that technical preparations for conducting the session continue to be refined, including coordination of moon sighting observations at various points distributed across different regions of Indonesia. From a technical perspective, the ministry has prepared support infrastructure for the session, a moon sighting reporting system, and coordination with crescent observation points throughout Indonesia. The aim is to ensure the session runs in an orderly, accurate, and informative manner for the public.

He also appealed to the public to await the official government announcement after the entire isbat session has been completed. The results of the isbat session and official announcement of 1 Shawwal 1447 Hijriah will be proclaimed by the Minister of Religious Affairs.

The Leadership Council (PP) of Muhammadiyah has already announced the official schedule for Ramadan fasting and Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah/2026 CE. The determination of Eid al-Fitr 2026 was issued through Muhammadiyah Leadership Council Statement No. 01/MLM/I.1/B/2025 regarding adjustment of the determination of 1 Ramadan 1447 Hijriah and its scientific explanation.

Based on the results of astronomical calculation (hisab hakiki wujudul hilal), it has been determined that Muhammadiyah’s Eid al-Fitr 2026 falls on Friday, 20 March 2026. The hisab hakiki wujudul hilal method is an astronomical calculation that combines accurate data on the positions of the sun and moon. Using this approach, Muhammadiyah can determine the beginning of Ramadan, Shawwal, and Dhul-Hijjah without depending on direct observation.

Additionally, Muhammadiyah has long utilised the Global Single Hijri Calendar (KHGT), which serves as the official reference for determining worship activities based on the Hijri calendar.
