Ministry of Religious Affairs and Jakarta Provincial Government Prepare IDR 500 Billion Cash Waqf Movement
The Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) together with the Jakarta Provincial Government is preparing a Cash Waqf Movement worth IDR 500 billion as part of the commemoration of Jakarta’s 500th anniversary in 2027, which is expected to become a national model for productive waqf management. ‘Jakarta’s 500th anniversary must be a momentum for the revival of waqf and zakat in Indonesia. We want Jakarta not only to be a modern city, but also to become the centre of the world’s Islamic philanthropic civilisation,’ said Waryono Abdul Ghafur, Director of Zakat and Waqf Empowerment at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, in Jakarta on Wednesday (5/8/2026). Waryono stated that Jakarta possesses all the potential to become a centre for the development of productive zakat and waqf in Indonesia. According to him, Jakarta’s position as the centre of government, business, and services is supported by millions of Muslim residents, thousands of mosques and prayer rooms, Islamic educational institutions, business entities, and civil servants who can become drivers of Islamic philanthropy. He explained that the movement will involve civil servants from the Jakarta Provincial Government and the Ministry of Religious Affairs as pioneers. The programme will also be supported by the Jakarta Provincial Government, the Regional Office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of Jakarta Province, Baznas DKI Jakarta, and various Islamic community organisations, businesses, universities, and the public. The funds raised are not only oriented towards increasing collection but are also directed to generate sustainable economic benefits through the development of productive waqf, sharia-based MSME financing, and the construction of productive waqf areas. Furthermore, the funds will support the empowerment of Islamic boarding schools, the strengthening of education and health services, the provision of scholarships, family economic empowerment, and various poverty alleviation programmes. Tatang, Head of the Mental Spiritual Division at the Mental Spiritual Bureau of the Regional Secretariat of Jakarta Province, expressed support for the initiative. According to him, cross-sector collaboration is key to realising Jakarta as an example of professional, modern, and impactful zakat and waqf management for the community. As a follow-up, the forum agreed to form a technical team involving the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the Jakarta Provincial Government, Baznas DKI Jakarta, the Indonesian Waqf Board (BWI), and related agencies. This team will formulate the implementation stages, the movement concept, the fundraising strategy, and supporting regulations before holding an audience with the Governor of Jakarta.
