Sorong, Southwest Papua (ANTARA) - The Head of the Infrastructure and Area Development Agency (BPPBK) for West Papua under the Directorate General of Cipta Karya, Ministry of Public Works, Corneles Sagrim, stated that the construction of the Southwest Papua provincial government centre has been completed 100 per cent.

He explained that the strategic development project, with a budget exceeding Rp444 billion, includes five main activities: land development, construction of three main buildings, and support for the drinking water supply system (SPAM) for the new autonomous region (DOB).

“All stages of work have been carried out in accordance with technical standards, including quality testing. The project has also been audited by the BPK,” Corneles said in Sorong, Southwest Papua, on Thursday.

According to him, the total land cleared for the government centre area reaches around 55 hectares.

However, current utilisation is still below 20 hectares and is focused on the construction of three main buildings, which include the Governor’s Office, the Provincial DPR (DPRP), and the Majelis Rakyat Papua (MRP).

He acknowledged that land limitations pose a challenge, particularly for the DPRP complex, which stands on approximately 0.7 hectares.

Meanwhile, the Governor’s Office has a land area of around 1.7 hectares.

The Governor’s Office building is designed to be modern and functional, equipped with multipurpose rooms, meeting rooms, the governor’s and deputy governor’s offices on the third floor, and lift facilities.

The building can accommodate up to 300 people at one time.

In addition, security aspects have been given attention by constructing the area at an elevation of more than 8 metres above sea level to anticipate potential flooding.

“The drainage system has also been designed to handle water overflow during heavy rain.

Although the physical construction has been completed, the inauguration of the government centre cannot be carried out in the near future,” he said.

The government, he added, is still awaiting the completion of area landscaping, which is currently entering the tender stage.

The area landscaping includes the construction of roads, drainage channels, green open spaces, a town square, and the main gate.

This area will also be equipped with a multi utility tunnel (MUT), an integrated underground piping system for utility networks such as water pipes, electricity, and telecommunications.

“We want all utilities to be neatly arranged underground so that the area looks more modern and orderly,” he said.

For full operationalisation of the building, he continued, it is still awaiting electricity supply from PT PLN (Persero) so that facilities such as lifts and other support systems can function optimally.

Nevertheless, Corneles emphasised that the building is in principle already usable and is just awaiting the handover process for management.
