Ministry of Public Works and Brantas Abipraya Accelerate Post-Disaster Infrastructure Recovery in Sumatra

The handling of post-disaster infrastructure in West Sumatra and North Sumatra is being accelerated to reduce the risk of flooding and landslides while restoring community activities. PT Brantas Abipraya (Persero), together with the Ministry of Public Works, is undertaking rehabilitation and reconstruction across several affected areas. PT Brantas Abipraya Corporate Secretary Dian Sovana stated that the works include river normalisation, sediment dredging, and embankment reinforcement at a number of disaster-prone points. “Through this construction, Brantas Abipraya is committed to delivering infrastructure that is more resilient, safe, and sustainable for communities affected by disasters,” Dian said in a written statement in Jakarta on Wednesday. According to Dian, the rehabilitation not only aims to repair damaged infrastructure but also to strengthen the area’s resilience against future disasters and accelerate the recovery of community activities. In West Sumatra, works are being carried out in 10 areas, namely the regencies of Kepulauan Mentawai, Padang Pariaman, Agam, Lima Puluh Kota, Pasaman, and West Pasaman, as well as the cities of Bukittinggi, Payakumbuh, Pariaman, and Padang. River normalisation is being conducted through sediment dredging to restore flow capacity and reduce flood risk. This work is taking place in Rantobi Village, Batang Natal District, Mandailing Natal Regency, North Sumatra, as well as along the Batang Bayang, Batang Lengayang, and Batang Palangai rivers in Pesisir Selatan Regency, West Sumatra. Additionally, embankment reinforcement using gabions is being carried out in Pisang Palah Village, Galang District, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra, to mitigate the risk of landslides and erosion threatening residential areas. “The embankment reinforcement with gabions is being implemented as a form of protection for residential areas from the threat of landslides and erosion, specifically in Pisang Palah Village, Galang District, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra,” Dian said. He added that the post-disaster infrastructure development is also directed at improving regional preparedness for future disasters. “Every construction project in this post-disaster rehabilitation and reconstruction programme is Brantas Abipraya’s commitment to delivering infrastructure that is better prepared to face disasters, while supporting the acceleration of community life recovery in affected areas,” Dian stated.
