Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP) is preparing a scheme for utilising state assets, including university campuses, to develop flats aimed at expanding housing access for the public. PKP Minister Maruarar Sirait (Ara) stated that the ministry is developing the programme by involving higher education institutions from the planning stage. “After this (event), I’m heading to the University of Indonesia to meet the rector at the student dormitory. We will prepare a scheme on how state assets in this context—namely campuses—can be used, for example, for flats on campuses,” Ara said during an internal meeting at the Ministry of PKP in Jakarta on Thursday. She explained that students from various disciplines will be involved in developing the programme, from legal aspects and engineering to financing. “So I want to involve students and universities in this process from the beginning,” she said. She added that this step is expected to broaden housing access for the public, particularly in educational environments. “This is a breakthrough step so that the housing programme is not just about physical construction but also involves the education ecosystem,” she revealed. The government is targeting the construction of up to 141,000 subsidised flat units in the Meikarta area, Bekasi, in phases to meet public housing needs through vertical housing development. Additionally, the government is continuing the construction of around 1,000 flat units in the Tanah Abang area, Jakarta, to provide housing in densely urbanised areas.
