Ministry of Law Yogyakarta Office Reminds of the Importance of IP Rights to Prevent Works from Being Claimed by Others, Including E-Sports Games

YOGYAKARTA – Awareness of protecting works through the registration of intellectual property rights (IPR) was once again promoted by the Yogyakarta Regional Office of the Ministry of Law (Kanwil Kemenkum) DIY during the commemoration of World Intellectual Property Day held at Teras Malioboro on Sunday (26/4/2026). This year’s commemoration carries the theme Intellectual Property (IP) and Sport or Intellectual Property and Sports.

Head of Kanwil Kemenkum DIY, Agung Rektono Seto, stated that IPR protection is an important step to maintain the economic value and authenticity of works. Especially since many creative products, from arts and culture to sports, have great potential if legally protected.

“All of this (can be registered -Red), copyrights, trademarks. Then, e-sports games, those who create online game applications can also register their trademarks to obtain protection from the government,” said Agung when met at Teras Malioboro on Sunday (26/4/2026).

Agung emphasised that without legal protection, local works risk being claimed by other parties, even when they are already widely known. Yogyakarta, known as a cultural city, is said to have much potential that must be immediately secured through IPR registration.

Some works that have been registered by the community include Kajengan arts, craft products, masks, wayang puppets, and films. In the future, they continue to encourage more local craft and art works to be registered.

“We are intensifying efforts so that besides arts, Yogyakarta crafts and kriya can also have their potential explored for registration as intellectual property,” he said.

“Because if registered, other regions can no longer claim them; they are only in Yogyakarta,” Agung added.
