Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Coordinating Ministry for Law, Human and Correctional Services (Kemenko Kumham Imipas) together with the Indonesian Financial Intelligence Unit (PPATK) are strengthening synergy and increasing the compliance of the legal profession.

During the Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Compliance Legal Forum 2026 held in Jakarta on Tuesday (29/9), the Secretary of Kemenko Kumham Imipas, Andika Dwi Prasetya, noted that increasing lawyer compliance is essential to support the implementation of the Anti-Money Laundering (APU), Counter-Terrorism Financing (PPT), and Counter-Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (PPSPM) regimes.

“The legal profession holds a very strategic position as a gatekeeper in preventing the misuse of professional services for money laundering purposes,” said Andika, as quoted from a statement confirmed in Jakarta on Thursday.

Furthermore, it was stated that professional confidentiality and the obligation to comply with the APU, PPT, and PPSPM regimes can, in principle, operate harmoniously.

According to him, professional confidentiality is a vital part of maintaining the trust and independence of lawyers, whereas compliance with statutory regulations is necessary to ensure that professional services and expertise are not misused to hide or transfer the proceeds of criminal acts.

Andika also expressed his appreciation to PPATK for organising the forum, which brings together various stakeholders to build a common understanding and strengthen collaboration in the prevention and eradication of money laundering and terrorism financing.

Meanwhile, the Head of PPATK, Ivan Yustiavandana, stated that strengthening the APU, PPT, and PPSPM regimes is an ongoing process that requires the collaboration and commitment of all stakeholders.

He assessed that increasing the level of compliance in facing the periodic evaluations by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) in 2029 is not solely aimed at meeting international standards or regulatory requirements, but is also part of the effort to maintain the integrity, resilience, and sovereignty of the national financial system.

Carrying the theme “Strengthening the Synergy of the TPPU Committee, PPATK, and Lawyers in Optimising the Role of Lawyers as Reporting Parties under the Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing Regime,” the forum serves as a space for dialogue to strengthen understanding, coordination, and the implementation of compliance obligations for the legal profession in supporting the effectiveness of the APU, PPT, and PPSPM regimes.

Through the organisation of the AML Compliance Legal Forum 2026, synergy between PPATK, the government, law enforcement agencies, professional organisations, academics, and lawyers is expected to be further strengthened.

Collaboration is considered essential to build an effective system for preventing and eradicating money laundering and terrorism financing, while simultaneously providing legal certainty, strengthening compliance, and ensuring the continued independence and professionalism of the legal profession.
