Ministry of Industry Affirms Indonesian Jewellery Sector's Strong Competitiveness
The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) has affirmed that the national jewellery industry possesses strong competitiveness in the global market, in line with improved export performance and the growing acceptance of Indonesian jewellery products internationally. Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita stated that the jewellery industry has a unique character as it combines creativity, skill, culture, and technology to produce high-value-added products. “The jewellery industry is one of the leading sectors with high added value and a significant contribution to Indonesia’s manufacturing exports. It not only generates foreign exchange but also serves as a vessel for preserving culturally valuable products and creating jobs spread across various regions,” the Minister said in a statement in Jakarta on Monday. To strengthen the sector, the ministry continues to encourage the development of the jewellery industry through capacity building, technological transformation, and market access expansion. One strategic step being implemented is supporting the organisation of the Bandung Jewellery Fair (BJF) 2026, scheduled for 11–14 June 2026. The exhibition, now in its second year, provides a platform for jewellery industry players to promote superior products, expand business networks, introduce the latest innovations, and strengthen the position of the Indonesian jewellery industry in the global market. Furthermore, the Minister revealed that the performance of the national jewellery industry is showing a positive trend. Throughout January–December 2025, the export value of jewellery and precious goods reached $9.1 billion, an increase of 64.73 per cent compared to the $5.5 billion recorded in 2024. According to Agus, this achievement reflects the increasingly strong position of Indonesian jewellery products in the international market. Therefore, the strengthening of product quality, design innovation, business sustainability, and the industry’s ability to respond to global market trends must continue to be improved. “This export increase is proof that the Indonesian jewellery industry has excellent prospects. This momentum must be maintained through strengthening the industrial ecosystem that can drive innovation, productivity, and sustainable competitiveness,” he stressed. Nevertheless, the jewellery industry still faces a number of challenges, ranging from global economic uncertainty, raw material price fluctuations, and changing consumer preferences, to the demands of increasingly rapid digital transformation. Consequently, strong synergy is needed between the government, associations, and business actors so that the national jewellery industry can adapt and grow sustainably. Meanwhile, the Director General of Small, Medium, and Miscellaneous Industries (IKMA) at the Ministry of Industry, Reni Yanita, emphasised that digital transformation and the implementation of Industry 4.0 are important factors in strengthening the competitiveness of the national jewellery industry. Reni stated that the utilisation of technology can increase operational efficiency, accelerate innovation, and produce higher quality products that meet market needs. “Digital transformation and the application of Industry 4.0 enable the jewellery industry to work more efficiently, produce more precise products, and respond to consumer needs more quickly and accurately,” she said. As part of the industrial transformation effort, the Ministry of Industry has conducted an Indonesia Industry 4.0 Readiness Index (INDI 4.0) assessment on a number of companies in the miscellaneous industry sector, including precious metal and jewellery industry players.
