Jakarta — The Ministry of Human Rights is calling on media organisations to present balanced reporting that combines exposure of social issues with coverage of development solutions in order to strengthen public awareness of human rights concerns.

Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai stated that media plays an important role in uncovering various problems affecting society, including different forms of violations and social inequality.

“Media must also expose the reality of social pathologies. On maternal mortality, child mortality, poverty, unemployment — it is fine to report on these,” he said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

However, he noted that media reporting should not stop at problem exposure, but should also highlight various resolution efforts and development initiatives being undertaken.

“Media must also campaign for development, how to address matters of a curative, preventive, and pre-emptive nature so we can build Indonesia,” Pigai said.

According to Pigai, this role is important so that media does not merely document problems, but also becomes part of prevention and public education efforts.

He added that media has a function to preserve, protect, and promote human rights values through the dissemination of accurate and balanced information.

With this approach, Pigai hopes media can strengthen public education functions while promoting development policies that are more responsive to human rights concerns.
