Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Human Rights (KemenHAM) is encouraging the formation of Reconciliation and Peace Villages (Kampung REDAM) in several areas of South Sulawesi. The initiative aims to strengthen a culture of peace based on human rights and enhance social resilience through reconciliation approaches.

Osbin Samosir, Director of Human Rights Services at the Ministry of Human Rights, stated that the Kampung REDAM programme is a strategic step towards building collective community awareness in managing peace and resolving conflicts peacefully by prioritising human rights values. “The Kampung REDAM programme is expected to serve as a social construction framework based on the principle of nurturing peace while upholding human rights, particularly in South Sulawesi Province,” Osbin said in a statement received in Jakarta on Wednesday.

During a meeting with the Makassar City Government on Tuesday, Osbin noted that the programme, initiated by Minister of Human Rights Nataliendo Pigai, is designed as a model for human rights-based development at the local level. It seeks to encourage community participation in maintaining social harmony and preventing conflict.

The Ministry of Human Rights aims for South Sulawesi to become one of the most active regions in developing Kampung REDAM under the principle of “Nurturing Peace, Upholding Human Rights.” Villages and sub-districts designated as Kampung REDAM will be encouraged to implement concrete programmes, ranging from the establishment of official task force decrees (SK) and peaceful conflict mediation to improving the overall quality of social life.

Osbin expressed hope that this initiative would strengthen the foundations of peace at the local level while supporting the sustainable protection and fulfilment of citizens’ basic rights.

Meanwhile, the Regional Secretary of Makassar, Zulkifli Nanda, stated that the local government is ready to support the programme’s implementation, including preparing pilot areas to ensure its effectiveness. “The Makassar City Government is fully prepared to support the implementation of Kampung REDAM, including proposing several areas as pilot projects to ensure effective execution,” he said.

To date, eight regencies and cities have declared their readiness to form Kampung REDAM, namely Makassar City, Maros Regency, Pangkajene and Islands Regency (Pangkep), Gowa Regency, Bulukumba Regency, Soppeng Regency, Pinrang Regency, and Bone Regency. The Ministry of Human Rights believes that expanding Kampung REDAM across various regions can serve as an instrument to strengthen social resilience and promote conflict resolution through dialogue, reconciliation, and respect for human rights.
