Ministry of Human Rights Emphasises Transparent Handling of Andrie Yunus Case
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Human Rights has emphasised the importance of handling the acid attack case against Deputy Coordinator of KontraS Andrie Yunus in a transparent, accountable, and free from distortion manner to maintain public trust in law enforcement.
Director General of Human Rights Services and Compliance at the Ministry of Human Rights, Munafrizal Manan, stated that the government has ensured victim protection, including guarantees for medical treatment funding.
“There is already clarity and certainty that medical costs will be covered by the state. The Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) has expressed its commitment, and the Ministry of Health is also ready to provide free comprehensive treatment until completion,” Munafrizal said in a statement in Jakarta on Thursday.
He explained that coordination has been carried out with the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) and the Ministry of Health to ensure the full fulfilment of the victim’s rights.
On the law enforcement side, the Ministry of Human Rights appreciates the police’s steps in initiating the investigation process. However, the process is urged to proceed professionally and based on evidence.
The Ministry of Human Rights also stated that the case handling needs to be carried out synergistically, following the steps of the TNI Military Police Centre (Puspom TNI), which has detained four members of the TNI Strategic Intelligence Agency (BAIS) suspected of involvement.
In addition, political oversight is deemed important. The Ministry of Human Rights supports the formation of a working committee by Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) to ensure the legal process runs in accordance with principles of justice and human rights protection.
The Ministry of Human Rights also welcomes the encouragement from Commission XIII of the DPR RI for intensive collaboration among national human rights institutions, including Komnas HAM and LPSK, to monitor the case until resolution.
Munafrizal emphasised that this case has strategic dimensions because it is a matter of wide public attention as well as international scrutiny.
“This case is a litmus test for public trust in law enforcement and human rights protection in Indonesia; therefore, it must be ensured that there is no reduction or distortion in this case,” he asserted.
He added that attention from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the UN Special Rapporteur indicates that the handling of this case will affect the global perception of Indonesia’s commitment to protecting human rights defenders.
“Serious law enforcement and multi-stakeholder collaboration in resolving this case are key to maintaining the trust of the public and the international community in Indonesia,” said Munafrizal.
The Ministry of Human Rights views the handling of this case as a momentum to strengthen the state’s commitment to protecting human rights defenders and maintaining the quality of democracy in Indonesia.
